Weeks after the Hathras alleged rape case that sent shockwaves across the country, another heartbreaking incident has come to light from Bastar in Chhattisgarh where a tribal teenager committed suicide after being raped and now her father has also attempted to kill himself. It was known only recently that she was raped and now her body has been exhumed, two months after her death.
Police came to know that the deceased teenager was allegedly gangraped during a marriage ceremony.
The incident was reported from Dhanora police station area of Kondagaon district in Chhattisgarh. About two months ago, seven men had allegedly raped the tribal girl. She had gone to a wedding ceremony with her friend on the day of the incident.
During the ceremony, 7 people forcefully took her to a nearby forest and raped her. Later when the victim came home after the marriage ceremony, she killed herself by hanging. After this, the family buried her body.
The family has now alleged that police didn’t lodge a FIR since then. Hurt by the apathy, the victim’s father tried to kill himself by consuming poison on October 4, after which the alleged rape of her daughter was revealed.
The family came to know a few days after her death that she was raped. At the same time, the friend of the deceased girl said that during the wedding ceremony some boys took her to the forest and raped her.
Now after two months, the girl’s body has been exhumed from the grave in the presence of a police team and sent for postmortem. Bastar IG Sundarraj P said that 5 out of the 7 accused have been arrested and searches are being conducted to arrest the remaining two.
The victim’s uncle has alleged that despite being aware of the incident, then then Station House Officer (SHO) at Dhanora did not pursue the matter further.
“Media reports revealed then Dhanora SHO Ramesh Sori had received information about the incident through local sources 15 to 20 days after it occurred and he had asked the victim’s family about it. “But Sori neither informed his seniors nor took further legal action,” the statement said.
