A military plane crashed in Ukraine on Friday night. The Air Force plane crashed near the eastern city of Kharkiv. At least 22 people have been reported killed so far in the crash. Two more people were injured. The country’s interior ministry said army trainees were among the casualties. The exact cause of the accident was not known.
It is learned that the Antonov-26 transport aircraft of the Ukrainian Air Force crashed 2 km away from the military airbase at 8:50 pm local time on Friday (11:20 pm Indian time on Friday). Immediately it caught fire. Rescuers managed to extinguish the fire in an hour’s effort.
Ukraine’s Interior Ministry has confirmed the news of the crash. “I am shocked by the whole incident,” Anton Zerashenko, the country’s deputy interior minister, told AFP. So far 22 people have been reported dead. Besides, 2 people could not be found. A search operation is underway to find them. It is unknown at this time what caused the accident.
The minister added that there were a total of 28 passengers on board the crashed military plane. Of these, 21 are army trainees and the remaining 6 are crew members.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed deep sorrow over the crash. He expressed deep sympathy to the relatives of the victims. He wished speedy recovery to the injured. In a Facebook post, Volodymyr Zelensky said he would visit the area where the military plane crashed on Saturday.
