Iran’s current supreme leader, the twelfth Sia Marja Ayatollah Saeed Ali Khamenei, has crossed the border into the Indian sphere of social media. He opened his Twitter account in Hindi.
Who is this “Supreme Leader” Khamenei?
The “Supreme Leader” made the final decision on almost everything from the Iranian military to the judiciary, broadcasting, the economy, foreign policy, and education. Even the country’s electoral system is largely under his control. Apart from the Minister of Defense and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the policy makers of the country were appointed at his discretion. Constitutionally, in many cases, the “supreme leader” is more powerful than the president.
The bio of Khamenei’s account is written in Devanagari script. So far, two tweets have been sent from Khamenei’s account. Those tweets are also written in Devanagari script. The number of Khamenei’s followers has already exceeded 1,000.
However, the former president of Iran has opened Twitter accounts in many languages, not just Hindi. That list includes Arabic, Persian, Urdu, French, Spanish, Russian and English. Which means Khamenei is entering every country on social media. Although there is no Indian leader as a follower in his Hindi account.
Iran’s relations with India are ancient and cordial. The two countries are working together on the port of Chabahar and the Chabahar-Jehedan railway line, despite US sanctions.
A few days ago, Iran issued an arrest warrant against Trump. Khamenei’s Iran blamed Trump after General Soleimani was killed in a US drone strike. Help went to Interpol to arrest Trump. The Iranian government even executed an Iranian citizen for keeping an eye on Soleimani. So the question is whether this tactic of Khamenei is better than Babarat in the US opposition this time. On the other hand, experts believe that the increase in the popularity of Hindi language in Iran may also be the reason for the Hindi tweet of the supreme leader of Iran.
