The systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) for short is one of the few incurable diseases in which most of the human body systems are affected simultaneously. By classifying the disease, this SLE is compared to rheumatological disease or rheumatic disease. It is a complex disease that never heals completely. However, with proper treatment, the symptoms and complications of the disease can be controlled.
According to health experts, SLE is a systemic autoimmune disease. This means that the body’s immune system works against its own body for some unknown reason, that is, instead of protecting the body from disease, it destroys various cells and tissues of the body. As a result, the working capacity of all those parts is reduced and the place becomes more damaged due to weakening. Doctors say that the longer a person suffers from this disease, the more complications related to this disease will appear in his body. Frequent illnesses, kidney complications, heart disease, chest water retention, sudden severe abdominal pain, brain complications, etc. can lead to the death of the patient. However, the exact cause of the disease is still being studied.
Note that the pop emperor Michael Jackson was infected with systemic lupus erythematosus. He was also undergoing treatment for a long time. But let’s find out what is this long-term SLE disease?
What is systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)?
The name SLE originated in the early twentieth century. ‘Systematic lupus erythematosus’ is a combination of Latin and English words. The word ‘systemic’ means that almost all the systems of the body are affected, the word ‘lupus’ means (metaphorically) a wound made by a wolf attack, and the word ‘erythematosus’ in Greek means reddening of the skin. SLE is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects various parts of the body, especially the skin, kidneys, brain, heart, lungs, blood vessels, arteries, and central nervous system, including the knees and elbows. This disease results in the production of various types of abnormal antibodies in the body. If these useless antibodies are not blocked with drugs, the ability of all organs to function gradually decreases. The disease is more common in people of African, Hispanic, Asian, and American descent. According to the Lupus Foundation of America, at least 1.5 million people in the United States are living with the disease. However, the number of infected people in our country is less than in America, 3.2 out of every one lakh people are suffering from this disease. According to a global study, women are 9 times more likely to develop the disease than men. The disease is more common in 15-35-year-olds.
